Volume 5, Number

Power 106 vs.

Big Boy of Power 106 shouts out with glee; his morning show scores in the top 10, and his station soars at No. 4 in the L.A. area. Representing the kinder, gentler side of the genre, cover girl Big Lez, The Beat's midday personality, reflects a dancer's grace on the air. Hip-hop is the main fixture in The Beat's household once dominated by R&B. KPWR 105.9 plays 70% hip-hop and 30% R&B.  But today's R&B songs are intermixed with hip-hop breaks; it's hard to tell where hip-hop ends and R&B begins. The explosion of more friendly "hip-pop" started in 1986. Breaking records is not uncommon on 92.3 The Beat and Power 106. Unlike top 40 stations, programming top brass gives their DJs freedom to pick new music.
