  • DOIN' THE SQUISH

Today Jeff and Jer played songs of previous dance crazes, but yesterday it was nearly two tons of smashed gords in the parking lot of a local shopping mall. Two pumpkins and one squash were to fall nearly 200 feet in the air via a cherry picker and two cranes. Pre-flight activities included a smashing pumpkin fest that garnered one lucky person/victim a shopping spree at the mall. Even though Jeff and Jer gave everyone a free hearing test via feedback on the radio and in the air -- and the first pumpkin being stubborn about its flight -- the three gords-o-fun plummeted to a smashing success. STAR BIZ

Laura Kane, the news and traffic reporter for Jeff and Jer, will be in the Nov. 22 "Renegade" television program on U.S.A. She will be the babe that hands a messenger envelope to a gunman.
Art Bell, nationally syndicated talk show host, will have a cameo appearance in December on NBC's "Darkskies." The show will be taped in mid-November. "Darkskies," a science-fiction series, bends history around an alien theory. Must See . . . .TV.

NEW 107.8 MHZ STATION ON THE AIR

Communications General Corporation engineers of Fallbrook, have documented a new 107.8 MHz Spanish language station on the air as of 9:15 AM PST on 10/31/96. The precise frequency is 107.80 MHz. Of course, this is not a standard FM frequency since standard frequencies always end in odd numbers (e.g. 107.7, 107.9). Operation on 107.8 MHz is not permitted by the U.S./Mexican FM Agreement. The station is identifying itself as "Estereo Sol."
Preliminary measurements suggest that the new transmitter is located in the Tijuana area. At 9:15 AM, there was a dead carrier on 107.7 MHz and a 5 dB stronger signal (with Spanish language programming) on 107.8 MHz. By 11:15 AM, the 107.7 MHz carrier had disappeared. One might suspect that the 107.7 operator had installed a new higher powered transmitter and had transferred broadcast operations to that plant. However, THIS IS ONLY SPECULATION at this time. A formalcomplaint has been filed with the FCC on behalf of KWVE(FM), 107.9 MHz, San Clemente. It is not known whether operation on 107.8 MHz is accidental or intentional. AND THEN THERE WERE TWO

Two stations, I'm told, are locally owned: KXST 102.1, Oceanside; and KURS 1040, an espanol station in San Diego. KURS was fined about two years ago for increasing its watts after the FCC closed the SD field office/monitoring station.

    TWANG!

What's going on a 95.7 KUPR? What's going on at 94.1 KFSD? Published reports indicate that the station formerly known as KUPR will drop the AAA music . . . and become c-c-c-country, to give San Diego a third station. The same reports indicate that the high rated classical station could move to granted a power increase from 7kw to 25kw ERP. The location on Mount Soledad gives the station a good signal from Ensenada, B.C., to Long Beach. The 94.1 is the only 100kw ERP station in San Diego county, and blankets the region with its soothing sounds of classical music. The stations, owned by Nationwide [NCI] will take full possession of KUPR and KCEO [AM 1000] sometime the first of the year. They are currently under an LMA to NCI. [The other country outlet is KOWF-FM 92.1 Escondido, and Arbie-topper KSON 97.1. It's noted that KOW-FM is number one in Escondido, but is limited to the extreme North County San Diego area.] [http://www.957.com]

    THE STATION SHUFFLE

Most of the focus recently have been on the "Gang of Ten" Jacor stations, but Jefferson-Pilot has been fine-tuning and tweaking as well. K-Best 95 [KBZT] and Jazz FM 98 [KiFM] will have their sales, traffic, administrative and promotions in one office in November. Those departments join force with KSON at the Mission Valley office. Plus, I'm told that the control room and air staff will move sometime in the month. The three FM stations are near the top in the Arbitron ratings. [KBZT is an oldies station, Jazz FM98 KiFM is NAC, and KSON is THE country station in San Diego. Also, 1240 KDDZ, broadcasts the KidStar format for the metro area.]

Part of the consolidation includes these changes: Jim Infantine, former local co-sales manager at KSON, moves to same at KBZT. Bob Lueke and Terry Janssen are local co-sales managers at KSON. Lueke retains his spot and T.J. gets upped. KSON Promotion Assistant Chris Turner bumped to Promotion Director at KBZT. Lisa Jackson retains that position at JAZZ FM98. Steve Sapp appointed Promotion and Marketing Manager - Jefferson Pilot San Diego, while retaining daily duties of Promotion/Marketing Director at KSON. Steve's new assistants at KSON: Duff Wilson and Danyell Millsap. Former KSON part time assistant Don Wilson becomes Lisa's assistant at KIFM. Art Root retained as Promotion Assistant at K- BEST 95 Mike Shepard named Director of Programming and Operations - Jefferson Pilot San Diego. The management has started the JAZZ FM98 $1000 Name game a couple of weeks ago; and have just completed the KSON SECRET SOUND contest. KSON has given away over $50,000!
